Front Light – High Key

The reason I used this photograph, along with the two following, is they were the few that turned out. I did not have a good day in the field this week. In this photograph the sun is in the upper right corner and there is a lens flair going down to the left corner. I was hoping to get more of a silhouette of the trees, but ended up washing out some of the picture. The technical specifics were: f2 & 1/1000.

Back Light

This is a photograph of my own shadow. The film barely turned out and to get this picture to print decent took some work in the darkroom. The sun is directly behind and overhead me. If I remember correctly, it is about 1 in the afternoon here. Once again I used this photograph because it turned out, barely. The technical specifics were the same as the previous photograph at f2 & 1/1000.

Side Light – Low Contrast

This is a photograph of a section of a piece of playground equipment. The sun is to the right and overhead, casting a shadow down and to the left. This photograph turned out the best out of all of them on the roll. I also tried to make it so the shadows in the boot steps in the snow could be seen. The technical specifics were f2.8 and 1/1000.

A Single Point

When I took this photograph I was actually taking pictures of a levy experimenting with diagonal lines. A plane just happened to fly over and I figured it to be perfect for a single point. I got lucky too because my camera was set at the proper settings for the photograph to turn out. The camera was set at f18 with a 1/1000 shutter speed.

Diagonal Lines

In this photograph I was trying to lead the eyes to the eagles nest with the diagonal lines created by the power lines. I over exposed this photo somewhat because of the sun. Even though not technically correct, I do think that the darker sky with the sun ring gives a somewhat interesting effect. I also thought that the sun would add another point to the photograph as well, creating multiple points. The camera was set at f18 and a shutter speed of 1/500.

Focus

I actually selected this photograph because most of my others did not turn out and I did not intend on using it for a submission. I unfocused the camera when I took the photograph and added additional blur to the photo with the enlarger in the darkroom.

Winter River 1

In this photograph the subject being famed is the stream. I was trying to frame the stream vertically with the two trees on either side of the photograph. The stream works from the bottom right, almost coming out of the right tree and then zig zags through the middle of the photograph, leaving sight about two thirds up. This photograph was shot with 400-speed film, a shutter speed of 1/60, and a f-stop of 11.

Winter River 2

The subject of this photograph was the same stream as in the first photograph. This time I framed the stream horizontally with two branches of a fallen tree. The snow-covered banks of the stream also add somewhat of a vertical frame. The stream is in the center of the photograph and fades off and to the right a little more than half way up the photograph. I cropped about one third of this photograph out to give it more of a framing effect. This photograph was shot with 400-speed film, a shutter speed of 1/250, and an f-stop of 5.6.

Winter River 3

Once again, the subject of this photograph is the same stream as the previous two. I also, once again, used two branches of a fallen tree to frame the stream horizontally. However, what makes this shot unique is the shape of the frame – the top branch is arched and there is even another branch coming off, giving it a more organic feel. The stream is centered and small in the distance. I tried to show that the stream was the subject by having it in focus, with the branches (frame) unfocused. This photograph was shot with 400-speed film, a shutter speed of 1/250, and an f-stop of 5.6.

In this photograph I was trying to get blurred hands waving while having the rest of the female in focus. It turned out somewhat grainy and out of focus. The sun was setting, so I had low light and I was really just gambling on what shutter speed to use. This one turned out the best out of all, which I think was set at 1/15 (however it could have been 1/30). This could also of added to the blur/grain since I did not have the camera on a tri-pod. The aperture was at f4.

I thought about what represents WSU in the simplest way. Walking around campus, observing and taking in everything two things stood out to me. One, this is a place of higher education and two, every building is brick. My photograph has a perspective looking up a brick wall covered in vines. The brick represents the physical part of being on campus and the vines represent the constant gain (growing) of knowledge in all directions, while the perspective represents the increase of knowledge that one may obtain at this university, and the sky is the cliche thought of the light at the end of the tunnel.
